My vision for a socialism/libertarianism hybrid economy in Canada:
Universal services provided by government (like health care now) (non-comprehensive list):
Housing
Essential foods (foods falling in food groups outlined in Canada Food Guide all which should be supplied by Canadian/local farmers)
Electricity for lighting, heating, internet
Internet
Education - all levels (pre-school to post-graduate) - system would have to be reformed though because right now it is based on colonial/capitalist ideologies
Local entertainment: art, culture, museums, festivals
Environmentally-friendly and sustainable transportation (and infrastructure that promotes this)
Services provided by free market (non-comprehesive list):
Cottages, luxury getaway residences, commercial real estate
Restaurant/prepared food/non-essential (junk) food
Electricity above a certain kWh per household
TV entertainment, live entertainment (sporting events, movies, concerts)
Recreational activities
Recreational vehicles
Rather than universal basic income which may still be inequitable because of price relativity in different places, inflation, new currencies entering the market (i.e. Bitcoin), etc, essential needs should be provided for by the federal government instead. There can still be a market economy that allows for incentive to innovate and create and compete but one that all people will have an equitable chance to participate in no matter their upbringing or circumstances because they will have their basic needs taken care of which the country of Canada (and actually the whole world if organized better) is capable of doing. This will also get rid of a lot of meaningless jobs that people do simply to make money to pay for basic needs but don’t add value to their own lives or the economy otherwise.
Rather than the "American Dream" which is about people, no matter what economic status/position monetary wealth they come from, having the opportunity to work hard to come to a place where one can buy anything they want to, my idea of the "Dream" would be a society where no matter who a person is, whatever family circumstance, whatever race or gender, whatever social class one comes from being able to work to a place of not just being able to buy or consume whatever one wants to but to a place being whoever one wants to and doing whatever one wants to. I believe this kind of society, this kind of "Dream" could be possible if everyone was assured their basic needs will always be taken care of which I believe is possible with the technology, intellectual ability, and moral standards the people of our world have.
This "socialism/libertarianism hybrid" society would be a solution to the problems our current society faces as described by David Graeber in his 2018 book Bullshit Jobs: The Rise of Pointless Work and What We Can Do About It (who I just found out died on my birthday this past year, September 2, 2020, which although is simply a coincidence, makes me feel a bit of a spiritual obligation to carry on his work):
